crispy tortilla strips
Narrow strips of corn tortilla, fried or oven-baked until crisp and lightly salted.
Ready-made strips are common in North American supermarkets but rare elsewhere; they are easily made by cutting corn or, failing that, flour tortillas into strips and frying or baking them until golden. Corn tortillas are sold in large supermarkets, Latin American shops or by mail order.
Substitute:
Roughly broken plain tortilla chips come closest, though they are thicker and usually saltier; strips cut from flour tortillas puff up more and taste less of corn.
