refried beans

Cooked beans, usually pinto or black, mashed and fried in lard or oil into a creamy, savoury purée.

Canned refried beans are sold in the international aisle of many supermarkets, in Latin American shops or online. They are also easy to make at home by frying cooked beans with a little onion in fat and mashing them.

Substitute:

Homemade from drained canned pinto, black or kidney beans, fried in lard or oil and mashed, they come very close to the original. Lard gives a rounder, more typical flavour than oil.
